DR JIM DUNCAN is the Chief Data Strategist and Director of Commodity Market Research for ConocoPhillips. Ever-changing global market dynamics require a dynamic mix of mathematical modelling, fundamental and technical analysis, a fully developed network of global intelligence, and an experienced team at ConocoPhillips to monitor financial markets and highlight successful economic strategies ahead of market shifts to assist ConocoPhillips and its customers with optimizing their risk positions. Using a unique blend of quantitative, experience and observational skill, his team continually evaluates all facets of the market to optimize asset values and manage risk.
In addition to 20 years as a trading economist building teams that monitor and predict financial market shifts for Fortune 500 companies, Dr Duncan has another 20 years with a broad background in science, engineering, and the arts. He spent his first 20 years in business as an engineer in process design, construction, and troubleshooting, where he led teams that produced patented petrochemical processes. In 1995, he sold his international manufacturing company and returned to the academic world as a professor of undergraduate and graduate chemistry, mathematics, and nutritional biochemistry. In 1998, Wall Street came knocking during a period when classical scientists were being hired to design and build financial models, which started the predictive analytics period in the finance world; giving a new eye and applying new methodologies to business acumen and data mining.
Dr Duncan has spoken to audiences in several countries and across the U.S. on a wealth of topics including price risk strategies and energy market fundamentals in the crude oil, refining products, petrochemical, natural gas, and power markets. He is a featured and popular speaker at numerous conferences and symposiums year-round.
Dr. Duncan is a member of the International Association of Energy Economists and a member of the Advisory Board at Tulane University’s School of Business, a member of the Board at the University of Houston’s School of Business, as well as member of the Advisory Board to the Schools of Business & Meteorology at the University of Pennsylvania. He is on the Advisory Board of the International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI), in Columbia University’s Earth Institute. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Physical Inorganic Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.
Dr Duncan enjoys golf, reading, and flying “any kind” of airplane he can find. Classically trained in opera, he’s also had a successful career in recording and performing.
